How a love of literature became a mission to help others read with intention
Hollow-kestrel began in 2018, not as a business but as a question: why do so many people say they wish they read more, yet struggle to pick up a book?
Our founder, after years working in academic publishing, noticed a widening gap. On one side stood the literary establishment—critics, professors, and publications speaking to those already deeply immersed in books. On the other stood millions of potential readers overwhelmed by choice, intimidated by canons, or simply unsure where to begin.
We developed what we call contextual curation. Rather than asking simply what genres you enjoy, our consultants explore the circumstances of your reading life. When do you have time? What emotional states draw you to books? Which past reads left lasting impressions, and which disappointed despite promising reviews?
This depth of inquiry allows us to suggest not just good books, but the right books for this particular moment in your life. A recommendation that would be perfect in autumn might feel wrong in spring; a novel ideal for a period of change might miss the mark during times of contentment.
Every consultant at hollow-kestrel holds advanced qualifications in literature, languages, or library science. More importantly, each has demonstrated what we call reading range—the ability to find genuine engagement across genres, from contemporary literary fiction to science fiction, from biography to poetry, from philosophy to graphic novels.
We do not believe in hierarchies of taste. A thriller can be as meaningful as a classic; a romance can offer as much insight as a work of literary fiction. What matters is the connection between reader and book, and that connection depends on factors no algorithm can measure.
We measure success not by how many books our clients purchase, but by how their relationship with reading evolves. Some arrive reading one book per year and leave reading twelve. Others arrive reading voraciously but without satisfaction, and learn to slow down, to savour, to reread.
In a world of endless content and constant distraction, we believe focused reading remains one of the most valuable practices available. It builds empathy, develops concentration, expands vocabulary, and offers the irreplaceable experience of sustained engagement with another mind's creation.
We are here to help you find your way back to that experience, or to discover it anew.
